Anna Kruhelska meticulously hand-cuts, folds, and arranges layers of paper to create her intricate, three-dimensional wall reliefs. Each fold is carefully calculated to capture and reflect light in unique ways, emphasizing the contrast between light and shadow.

Her process, influenced by her architectural background, is both precise and creative, resulting in striking works that are minimalist in design yet rich in texture and depth.

Bridging Architecture and Art

With a background as a practicing architect, Anna Kruhelska brings a unique understanding of form, symmetry, and spatial relationships to her art. Having worked on major architectural projects across Russia, Malaysia, and the UK, Kruhelska applies this knowledge to her innovative contemporary practice. Her paper-based, three-dimensional wall reliefs are a testament to her ability to merge architectural precision with artistic minimalism, creating pieces that invite viewers to explore the interplay between light, shadow, and texture.

Illuminated Forms: The Dance of Light and Shadow

The Play of Light and Form

Kruhelska’s work is centered around the interaction between light and shade, where every fold and hollow in her paper creations plays a role in shaping the viewer’s experience. Influenced by minimalism, geometry, and architectural composition, her clean, crisp, often white-on-white installations capture a sense of harmony and elegance. These pieces are designed to reflect light in ways that shift depending on the viewer’s angle, making each artwork a dynamic, evolving experience. Although her works often appear to flow seamlessly from one to the next, they maintain their individuality, creating a visual rhythm that draws the viewer in.

I love minimalism and simplicity and I am fascinated by patterns, texture and the play of light and shadow. Wanting to combine all these inspirations, I began to experiment with pleating fabrics but after few months, I turned to paper which I used to work with a lot during my university years. While there are many limitations of paper I discovered that it gives me a lot of creative freedom and possibilities. That’s how it all began.
